Module 1: Chat Sync

Learn how Mio connects Google Chat and Microsoft Teams for messaging, syncing channels, direct messages, and group chats.

Chat Sync overview

Hi everyone, welcome to Mio Academy. I'm Jacob, and today I'm going to show you our core feature: Chat Sync. Chat Sync enables seamless communication between Google Chat and Microsoft Teams.

Mio is the only fully native chat solution designed specifically for enterprises looking to connect their internal teams across different platforms. Chat Sync ensures that messages are securely delivered regardless of the platform being used.

Let's start with a quick demo.

As you can see, messages sent in Google Chat are instantly delivered to Microsoft Teams and vice versa. This is made possible by Mio's API-based integration, which acts as a bridge between these platforms.

What are primary and secondary accounts?

Let’s take the example of Greg Taylor, a user who spends most of his time on Google Chat but needs to communicate with colleagues on Microsoft Teams. In Greg’s case, his primary account would be Google Chat.

In order for chat interoperability to work, users must be represented with accounts on both platforms. So Greg will need a Microsoft Teams secondary account in order to communicate with other Teams users.

We would refer to Greg as a Google Chat primary user, or Teams secondary user.

This brings us to our next question:

What are the account types that Mio uses to sync my users?

There are several account types that Mio syncs to enable cross-platform direct messaging. These differ by platform and license structure. They are:

  • Fully licensed accounts are user accounts on any platform that your company has paid for. These accounts are used for the most native messaging experience possible.
  • Interop accounts are a Mio-specific SKU used in Google Chat. These are free accounts that are created to represent Microsoft Teams primary users on Google Chat. Neither Mio nor the user has access to these accounts, which are simply used during the sync process.
  • Guest accounts are free accounts in a Microsoft Teams tenant. These are similar to interop accounts in that they are used to represent Google primary users on Microsoft Teams.

Now that we’ve covered the types of accounts that Mio uses in order to enable Chat Sync, let’s move on to our next section:

How does Chat Sync handle message formatting and attachments?

Chat Sync preserves the original formatting of messages, including bold, italics, and lists. It also supports attachments like files, images, links, and GIFs, ensuring that all the content is delivered seamlessly between platforms. This means your team won't miss out on any important details, regardless of which platform they are using.

How do I monitor and administer Chat Sync?

Lastly, admins can monitor Chat Sync activity through the Mio Admin Hub, where they can see the status of synced channels and users.

The Hub also provides detailed logs and diagnostic tools to help troubleshoot any issues that may come up. This ensures that your team stays connected and any disruptions are minimized.

Channels and spaces

Hi everyone, welcome back to Mio Academy. I'm Jacob, and in this video, we'll dive into what users experience when chatting in a synced cross-platform channel or space.

Here we have a Google Chat space and a Microsoft Teams channel. When these are synced with Mio, users can communicate effortlessly with colleagues across both platforms.

Let's take a look at how a typical conversation flows within a synced channel.

As you can see, a message sent in Google Chat instantly shows up in Microsoft Teams. This real-time synchronization ensures that everyone stays in the loop, regardless of the platform they are using.

Messages sent from Microsoft Teams also appear instantly in Google Chat. This bidirectional and native communication is the heart of Mio's interoperability feature.

How does Mio handle threaded messages and replies?

In Microsoft Teams channels, conversations around the same topic often happen in threads. When a user replies to a specific message in a thread, Mio ensures that the context is maintained when it appears in Google Chat.

As you can see, the threaded reply in Microsoft Teams shows up in Google Chat with the context intact. This means that your team can follow conversations naturally, regardless of the platform.

How does Mio handle file attachments?

Mio supports the synchronization of various types of media and files, ensuring that all content is accessible across platforms.

When a user shares an image or file, this includes GIFs, in Microsoft Teams, it appears in Google Chat just as it would natively. This ensures that important documents and visuals are always available to your team.

Direct messages and group chats

Hi everyone, welcome back to Mio Academy. I'm Jacob, and in this video, we'll dive into what users experience when they are synced for cross-platform direct messages or group chats. Let's get started.

Demo: Direct message between Google Chat and Microsoft Teams

First, let's take a look at a direct message conversation between Google Chat and Microsoft Teams.

As you can see, a message sent in Google Chat instantly shows up in Microsoft Teams. This real-time synchronization ensures that conversations can continue smoothly, regardless of the platform.

In Google Chat, users can quote specific messages in a reply. When a quoted reply is sent in Google Chat, it appears in Microsoft Teams as well. This ensures that the context of the conversation is preserved across platforms.

This brings us to our next question.

Can users search for a colleague from any platform?

One of Mio’s most powerful features is the ability to search for any user across platforms, making it easy to start direct messages or group chats.

With Mio, you can use the search bar in either Google Chat or Microsoft Teams to find any user in your organization. Simply type the user's name to start a direct message or add multiple users to a group chat. This seamless discoverability ensures that you can connect with anyone, without having to memorize which platform your colleagues use.

How does Mio handle group chats?

To illustrate cross-platform group chats, we’ll be using Greg Taylor, a Google Chat user.

He begins a group chat with his colleagues Tessa Park, a Teams user, and Hugh Mann, another Google Chat user.

When all users are synced for cross-platform messaging, group chat messages are delivered across platforms in real time. This ensures that all members of the group are always on the same page, regardless of their primary platform.

Here’s what the same group chat looks like for Hugh and Tessa.
